Tubeless spoked wheels have a real advantage over tubed setups. When you pick up a nail, you don’t get that sudden catastrophic deflation. The air leaks out slowly. Usually. Gives you time to notice something’s wrong and pull over safely.

Assess the situation once stopped. Front or rear? How fast is air escaping? Can you still see the tire holding shape or is it going completely flat?
Locate the puncture source if visible. Sometimes the nail or screw is right there, obvious. Sometimes you have to look.
Check remaining tire pressure if you have a gauge. Knowing whether you’re at 10 psi or 32 psi changes your options.

Best Tire Plug Kits for Motorcycle Tubeless Repairs

Stop & Go mushroom plugs: Rubber mushroom-shaped plugs that seat from inside the tire. Very secure. Require a probe tool to insert through the puncture, then inflate to pull the mushroom head against the inner tire surface. More permanent than string plugs. Slightly more complex to install.
Sticky string/worm plugs: Rubber-coated strings that you thread through an insertion tool and jam into the puncture hole. Simple. Fast. Effective. The most common emergency solution for good reason.

Step-by-Step: Emergency Tire Plug Repair
Clear numbered steps. Follow them in order. Even under stress with traffic passing ten feet away.
Step 1: Locate and Mark the Puncture
Find the hole first. Use the methods from the assessment section. Visual inspection, listening, feeling for escaping air, soap/water test.
Once found, mark around the puncture with chalk or marker. Draw a circle. Make it obvious. You’ll be glad you did this step.
Leave the puncturing object in place initially. That nail or screw is actually helping you right now. It’s slowing air loss. The hole leaks faster once you remove it.
Check if sealant is attempting to seal the hole on its own. Sometimes it is. Strings of sealant working out around the object means the sealant is trying. Small punctures might seal without plug intervention.
Step 2: Remove the Puncturing Object
Time to pull it out.
Use pliers to grip the nail, screw, or debris firmly. Needle-nose pliers work best for getting good purchase.
Pull straight out. Don’t wiggle. Don’t angle. Straight out along the axis the object entered. Angling tears the hole larger.
Work quickly once the object is out. Air loss accelerates immediately. Have your plug kit ready and open before extraction.
Step 3: Prepare the Hole (If Required)
This step depends on which plug type you’re using.
For string plug kits: Use the reamer tool included in your kit. Insert it into the puncture hole. Work it in and out a few times. This cleans debris from the hole and slightly enlarges it so the plug can seat properly. Essential step for string plugs.
For Dynaplug: Skip this step entirely. The pointed brass tip of Dynaplug is designed to enter unprepared holes. Reaming would make the hole too large.
When reaming is necessary: anytime the puncture is tight, anytime debris or rubber dust is visible around the hole, anytime you’re using string-type plugs.
When to skip: Dynaplug installation, holes that are already clean and appropriately sized.
Step 4: Insert the Tire Plug
For String/Worm Plugs:
Thread the plug material through the insertion tool’s eye. Center it so equal lengths hang from each side.
Coat with rubber cement if your kit includes it. Not strictly required but improves seal longevity.
Position insertion tool perpendicular to the tire surface. 90-degree angle to the puncture.
Push the tool into the puncture firmly. Insert about 2/3 of the plug length into the tire. Some of the plug should still be visible outside.
Twist the tool handle a quarter turn while pulling straight back out quickly. The plug stays in place while the tool releases.
Trim the excess plug material flush with the tire tread. Leave a tiny bit above the surface rather than cutting below.
For Dynaplug:
Insert the brass-tipped plug straight into the puncture hole.
Push until the mushroom head inside the plug seats against the inner tire surface. You’ll feel resistance increase.
Pull the insertion tool back to release the plug. The brass tip and plug remain in the tire.
Trim the protruding tip flush with the tread surface.
Step 5: Re-inflate the Tire
Remove the valve core first. Use your core removal tool. This allows maximum airflow from your compressor or CO2 cartridge. Makes inflation much faster.
Inflate to the pressure specified on the tire sidewall. Or your preferred pressure. For emergency repairs, going slightly higher than normal is fine. Extra pressure helps seat the plug.
Listen carefully as you inflate. Air leaking around the plug means the repair isn’t sealing. You may need another plug or a different approach.
Reinstall the valve core once desired pressure is reached.
Rotate the wheel slowly. If you have tire sealant in the tire, this distributes remaining sealant over the plug area from inside. Extra insurance.
Step 6: Test the Repair
Spray soapy water directly on the plug. Watch for bubbles. Bubbles mean air leakage. No bubbles means sealed.
Verify the tire holds pressure for several minutes. Check the gauge reading. Wait three to five minutes. Check again. Pressure should remain stable.
Confirm the plug is secure and sitting flush with the tread. Pull gently on any excess material. It should resist. Flush trim means no edges to catch on debris.
Monitor pressure before riding. And periodically during your ride if possible. First few miles are most likely to reveal a failing repair.
Can I use the same tire plugs as cars/trucks?

Yes. The tire plug chemistry is essentially the same. Rubber compound plug material works on car, truck, and motorcycle tires identically.
But motorcycle-specific kits often have better tools. Designed for reaching tight spots between bodywork and tires. Smaller diameter plugs that work better for typical motorcycle tire punctures. More compact packaging for under-seat storage.
String-type plugs are universal. The same strings that plug a truck tire will plug your motorcycle tire. If you’re at an auto parts store and only find truck kits, buy them. They work.
How long does a tire plug last?

Never use a plugged tire for: Track days. High-speed sustained riding. Situations where failure consequences are severe. The plug could fail at the worst possible moment.
What if I can’t find the leak?
Slow leaks are frustrating. The air escapes so gradually that detecting the exact location takes effort.
Submerge the wheel in water if possible. Creek, puddle, someone’s kiddie pool, a bucket if the wheel fits. Rotate slowly underwater. Bubbles betray the leak location.
Spray soapy solution on the entire tire surface systematically. Dish soap mixed with water works great. Cover every inch. Watch for bubble formation anywhere.
Over-inflate slightly to make the leak more obvious. Higher pressure means faster air escape. Makes detection easier.

Some tire shops will do internal patches. Others only recommend replacement. Shop policies vary widely on this. Motorcycle-specific shops are usually more willing than car tire chains.

Is tire sealant alone enough for emergency repairs?
